On the road to success, there will invariably be setbacks and challenges that seem difficult to overcome. As a business owner, if you can learn to adapt to new circumstances and move past challenges with a positive attitude, you will become virtually unstoppable. Following are some tips that can help you pick yourself up after a setback.

-Remember why you started. Can you remember how excited you were when you decided to start your own business? What were you most excited about? Take some time to re-light the fire that got you going in the first place and visualize yourself living the life you want.

-Acknowledge your progress. Giving yourself credit for how far you’ve come will bolster your spirits. Especially when you think about all of the things you’ve done that you won’t have to do again or that you will know how to do better next time. Every day you get better and smarter, so think about how much you’ve learned and how much you’ve done since you began, and give yourself a pat on the back.

-Review your business plan. Mistakes and setbacks almost always provide great opportunities for learning. Take your newfound knowledge and re-evaluate your business model and practices. If you can think of a better way to do business, implement it and move forward.

-Set goals. When things don’t go the way you want them to, it’s easy to become overwhelmed and fall into a slump. If you take some time to outline a specific game plan with very thorough and measurable steps, you will be able to climb out. It’s so much easier to get started when step one is something like: “draft an email to customers explaining the mix-up” rather than “fix the mistake”. One task is clear and the other is overwhelmingly unclear. Careful planning and measurable tasks are easy to complete and will put you back on track.

-Share your setbacks with someone who cares. Whether it’s a trusted business mentor, your spouse, or your mom, there is always someone that cares about your well-being and success. Even if they can’t give you advice or tell you how to get out of trouble, they can always offer encouragement and support. Sometimes, just knowing that someone else cares about how you are feeling and wants you to succeed is enough to lift your mood and make your problems seem manageable.

Every successful person in the world has had to face challenges and seemingly insurmountable setbacks. The only reason they are successful today is that they were able to pick themselves up one time more than their competition. Believing in yourself is more than a trite sentiment for school children, it’s a powerful business tool.
